Mary Matilda LEWIS (1873?)

Mary Matilda LEWIS was born most likely around 1873. No birth record has yet been found and this date is determined from the 1911 and her marriage certificate - however her age on the 1901 census puts her birth year at 1877 so this also has to be considered. Her place of birth on both of these census records is Ashton-Under-Lyne (Lancashire). Mary's father is given as Matthew WARD on her marriage certificate. Her mother is yet unknown although it is assumed that her maiden name is possibly LEWIS.

On 19 July 1897, Mary marries Thomas HUDSON (also known as Thomas JOHNSON) in the parish church in Cheadle.

Mary appears in the 1901 census in Tape Street, Cheadle along with Thomas. Her occupation is given as Hawker. At the time of the 1911 census, Thomas and Mary are living in Sturston near Ashbourne. They have four children at that point, William, Kathleen, John Thomas (known as Tom) and Frederick. It is recorded that they have had thirteen children born alive with only four surviving and so it is almost certain that some of these were born before the eldest living child (William born 1901). Frederick dies shortly after the 1911 census but at least two more children are born after this, George in 1913 and Albert in 1917. The family were in the Uttoxetor area at both of these times.

On 11 July 1933, Mary dies in Brassington. The cause of death given is epilepsy and it is also noted that she has arthritis of the spine. Her grandchildren recall her being bed bound for the later part of her life. She is buried in Ashbourne.
